About the National Guard Association of the United States

The National Guard Association of the United States (NGAUS) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan professional military association founded in 1878 to advocate for the interests, readiness, and welfare of the Army National Guard and Air National Guard. NGAUS works to ensure the National Guard remains a modern, well-equipped, and well-supported component of the United States’ total force.

Who the Association Represents

The National Guard Association of the United States represents current and former National Guard officers, warrant officers, and enlisted leaders, as well as supporters committed to strengthening the National Guard and advancing its missions at the state and federal levels.

What the Association Does

  • Advocates before Congress, the Department of Defense, and federal agencies on National Guard policy and funding
  • Supports readiness, modernization, and resourcing of Army and Air National Guard units
  • Promotes professional development, leadership education, and military conferences

Where the Association Operates

NGAUS operates nationally with headquarters in Washington, D.C., and works closely with state National Guard associations across all U.S. states, territories, and the District of Columbia. Advocacy and engagement occur at the national and state levels.

Membership Eligibility Requirements

Membership in the National Guard Association of the United States is open to individuals connected to the National Guard community.

  • Eligible members generally include current and former officers and warrant officers of the Army National Guard and Air National Guard.
  • Associate or affiliate memberships may be available to enlisted members, retirees, spouses, civilians, and supporters, depending on membership category.
  • No combat service or wartime service requirement applies.
  • Members are expected to support the mission and advocacy objectives of the Association.

How Membership Is Structured

Membership is administered through the national organization and coordinated with state National Guard associations. Members may participate in advocacy initiatives, professional development programs, conferences, publications, and organizational governance that advance the interests of the National Guard.
